If you accept the scholarship, you agree to provide 12 months of full-time direct patient care at an HCAI-eligible facility in a medically underserved area. You must begin that service within 6 months of graduating from your LVN program. Eligible facilities include hospitals, community clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), skilled nursing facilities, and other HCAI-designated sites in medically underserved areas (MUAs) or health professional shortage areas (HPSAs).
How to Apply for the VNSP: Step by Step
The VNSP application cycle typically opens in August or September each year. The 2025-26 cycle opened on September 2, 2025 and closed on October 3, 2025.
Step 1: Create an account on the HCAI Funding Portal at funding.hcai.ca.gov.
Step 2: Gather proof of enrollment, your transcript showing GPA and completed units, and identification documents.
Step 3: Complete the application in full. Incomplete applications are not reviewed.
Step 4: Submit before the deadline. The cycle window is firm.
Step 5: Wait for results. If selected, you will receive instructions on accepting your award and completing your service obligation agreement.
Other Financial Aid Options for LVN Students
FAFSA and Pell Grant. Many LVN students qualify for federal Pell Grants, which do not require repayment.
