LVN Clinical Rotation Supply Checklist California

Your first clinical rotation is one of the most significant days of your vocational nursing education. It is also one of the days that students most commonly feel underprepared for, not because of clinical knowledge, but because of logistics.

Showing up to a clinical site without required supplies, with the wrong uniform, or missing documentation creates a poor first impression and can interfere with your participation. In some programs, it results in being sent home.

This guide covers what you need to bring to LVN clinical rotations in California, organized by category.

Your Uniform and Personal Appearance Requirements

Clinical uniforms for LVN programs in California are set by the school, not by the clinical site. Read your program dress code policy carefully before purchasing anything.

Scrubs. Most programs require a specific scrub color. Have at least two complete sets clean and ready. Clinical ID badge. Must be worn and visible at all times on the clinical floor. Closed-toe, non-slip shoes. Sandals and canvas shoes without slip-resistance are not permitted. Minimal jewelry, hair pulled back, short clean nails, no strong fragrances — all are standard infection control requirements.

Clinical Supplies to Carry

Stethoscope. A dual-head model with good acoustic quality. Write your name on it. Blood pressure cuff. Bringing your own ensures you always have the right size. Penlight. For pupil assessment and checking skin color. Bandage scissors. For wound care and cutting tape. Nursing watch with a second hand. Smartwatches are typically not permitted on the floor. Black ink pen — bring at least two. Hand sanitizer — a personal bottle means you never have to leave a patient encounter to find one.

Documentation to Bring Every Day

Student clinical badge, immunization records or verification card, current BLS/CPR certification card, clinical assignment paperwork completed before arrival, and any approved drug reference resource.

What to Leave at Home

Phones must be stored during patient care. Food and drinks are allowed only in designated break areas. Large backpacks and excessive personal items should stay in your car or a locker.

Before Your First Clinical Day

The night before, review your assignment details: the clinical site address, your arrival time, your assigned supervisor, and any required preparation. Know the parking situation in advance — hospital parking in Los Angeles can be complicated, and arriving even five minutes late is noted.

At Career Development Institute in Los Angeles, clinical preparation begins in the skills lab before students ever reach a clinical site. CDI’s BVNPT-approved VN program uses a 10-bed skills lab with high-fidelity simulators where students practice clinical procedures before their first supervised patient encounter. CDI has been training vocational nurses in Los Angeles for over 20 years and was recognized by the Los Angeles Times for return on investment.
